Farewell, EDPC

Regular readers know that I run the Edinburgh Dinner Party Club. I’ve done this for a year, and have worked quite hard on organising events and making this as fun and fruitful as possible for my almost 800 members.

But it is with some regret but definite careful consideration that I have decided to step down as “leader” of the club. My reasons are mostly personal, although some are related to the group. To be honest, I don’t have enough time on my hands at the moment to fully dedicate myself to it. I also don’t see myself being able to commit in the future. I hope to remain a member and continue to attend and host dinner parties, but I think taking a back seat is the right step for me.

What worries me, is that I sent my members a message asking for a volunteer(s) to take over as leader. Unfortunately nobody has expressed an interest as yet. My mind is almost certainly made up, and I fear I will have to delete the group altogether should a volunteer not step forward. How sad that would be. So if you are reading this, and fancy a foodie challenge, please get in touch with me.

All that said, I remember our dinners and other events fondly and mouth-wateringly!

Happy dining!

Diet City update

It’s no secret that I love my grub, but that I am also obsessed with dieting. I joined PureGym in May, and have continued to try to watch what I eat. With my social calendar filling up (ooh err!), indulgences seem to be presenting themselves to me more and more frequently. So I decided to change my eating habits alongside working out frequently.

I’d like to introduce you to two healthy food companies: Musclefood and Better Than.

Musclefood

I first saw Musclefood advertised through Groupon, where they were offering a large high-protein low-fat meat hamper for £29 (which was around 60% off – excellent). The meat was excellent; flavoursome sausages, massive chicken breasts, succulent steaks and much more. Musclefood send weekly emails with weekly deals. Given I was so impressed with my first order, I decided to order more. My next healthy deal (both for my wallet and waistband!) was a larger hamper for £55 (down from around £130). The great thing about Musclefood is that you can choose when you get your meat delivered, and the money comes out your accounts a couple of days before. My meat arrived yesterday. Here it is in all its glory:

This delivery included hache steaks (which, admittedly, I’ve never heard of), more massive chicken breasts, diced turkey pieces, beef burgers, lean steak mince and lots lots more!

My next order is coming mid-September and it is a BBQ hamper with a pork joint for pulling, steaks, burgers and Jack Daniels sauce! I’ve also thrown in chilli chicken meatballs and horse sausages (because I’ve never knowingly tried horse. Ha ha ha.)

I cannot rate this company enough. One thing to point out though; they operate a £25 minimum spend on their website, so unless you have a massive freezer or, indeed, a massive boyfriend/family, you may struggle to fill up your basket.

All in all, I can see myself being a customer for a very long time.

Better Than

Another Groupon find, Better Than offer noodles, rice and pasta made from flour from a Japanese plant called konnyaku. These products are low calorie, low GI, low fat and low carb, so naturally I jumped at the chance of buying them. The products retail at £3.75 per pack, but Groupon were offering 24 units for around £30. The packs, when drained, weigh 300g, and at 9 calories per 100g serving, I really don’t think you could go wrong even if you fancied a full pack!

Given the nature of the product, I was expecting a neutral taste but was curious as to the texture. I tried the noodles for the first time last night, and although initially chewy, I soon got used to it and actually think they hold up better in a noodle soup, which was what I had, better than your standard rice or egg noodles would. What I’m really happy about, is that I had a really filling and tasty meal without the fat or guilt. And I used my Musclefood chicken, so I get my protein boost too!

As an aside, the Better Than products are quite attractively packaged:

One thing to consider though, is would you be willing to pay £3.75 per pack, when the Groupon offer effectively sold it for a third of the price? I’ll see how I get on!

BTTF meets RSNO

My birthday was back in March, and I was lucky enough to receive two tickets to see Back to the Future at the Festival Theatre with a live score from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. This was a lovely gesture from my younger brother. The event screened on 27th June.

Back to the Future has been my favourite film since I first saw it at the tender age of 9. It is one of my brother's firm favourites too, and we have always shared a special bond over it. I think this is the reason, as well as the brilliance of the film itself, that made this evening, and indeed the film, so special to us.

You all know the plot to the Back to the Future so I shan't go into the details. (If you haven't seen it, you're a butthead.) This was the second time I've been lucky enough to view BTTF on the big screen, and it really does bring something extra to the table. It is more colourful and vibrant, as well as amping up the ever-present doubt that Marty will actually make it back in time!

The RSNO were phenomenal. What a performance they put on. They had clearly rehearsed hard, and this resulted in a captivating and precise delivery of the wonderful score. They played added extras too, such as sound effects here and there, and this really was a treat.

The film ended with a rip-roaring version of the BTTF main theme from the orchestra. The sort of feeling that I get when I hear a piece of music I really love gives me an uncanny feeling; it is almost one of pride, and I suppose it is slightly overwhelming. I felt this when the orchestra closed the evening on the main theme. It really was magical and fully deserving of the long-lasting standing ovation they received from the grateful audience.

A fantastic evening was had by all, and I could not have asked for a better birthday present!
