What to wear to a work dinner?

Being a young professional woman who enjoys a good night out often presents the problem of gauging what is appropriate attire for a work dinner both preceded and followed by a drinking session.

In this post I am going to aim to give you some tips on how to look appropriate without, hopefully, sounding pretentious, self-loving and patronising, based on what I recently wore to quite a fancy function.

Being a relatively formal dinner, I wanted something that covered me up without looking dowdy or, on the other end of the spectrum, completely over the top. I opted for a long and not too clingy black dress from River Island. The dress, as you will see from the photo below, is ankle length and has a tasteful slit up the side. It does expose arms, but the the straps are high cut so you aren't exposing too much, or indeed any, chest.

My River Island special

Given I chose plain black strappy heeled sandals to go with my dress, I decided a little bit of colour would be nice in the form of a statement necklace. This was gifted to me, but I believe it is from Forever 21. It wasn't too heavy and didn't weigh me down, which is good if you're going to be out for a long time. Nothing worse than a sore neck when you're tucking into your amuse-bouche, I say.

As for make-up, given the occasion I think either bold eye or bold lip is the way to go. Not both. I used my favourite deep red lipstick and just a smidge of black eyeliner to set my eyes. Anything heavier on the eyes and I fear I would have looked like I was performing at a burlesque show. Which is lovely, but not what I was aiming for.

My hair was simply blow-dried and loosely curled with a little hairspray.

For those interested, the dinner was held at the Royal Scots Club on Abercrombie Place; a venue I would recommend both in terms of food and service.

I hope this helps. Happy styling!

Vegetarian dinner delights

Being the greedy foodie and dinner party go-er that I am, I could not turn down an invitation a few weeks ago to a vegetarian dinner party organised by the friend of a friend's Meetup Group, Social Fitness. I'm not a vegetarian, as you know, but have never been to a dinner or any other event where the food was solely meat-free. With this in mind, I was curious as to what would be put down in front of me, as well as a little apprehensive...

The Social Fitness group vegetarian dinner

The night took a "pot luck" format where every guest had to contribute the vegetarian dish of his or choice. I admit I was a little late in putting mine together, having been out on the town the Wednesday and Thursday that week, as well as full-time working, but I was quite pleased with what I came up with, and it didn't go down too badly with the guests. Hurray! I really wanted to avoid chickpeas because I had a feeling there would be a lot at the table, but I caved and made a spicy chickpea, tomato and date tagine, of sorts. I say "of sorts" because I don't have a tagine so it was really just a one pot wonder.

Quick recipe:
oil
1 onion
1 clove garlic
2 tins chopped tomatoes
1 tin chickpeas
1 tin dates
100g rice
1 teaspoon of each of the spices of your choice - I used chilli powder, cumin, coriander, turmeric and ginger

Fry the onion and garlic in a little oil, then chuck everything else in, bring to the boil and simmer for 40 minutes!

Like I said, I was in a rush and usually my dish wouldn't be so shoddy. It was good though. Surprisingly good.

Other dishes included pizza (a classic), salads, stews and cheeses. The highlight, however, was a savoury cake comprising blue cheese and walnuts. It was definitely the best dish of the evening and I absolutely destroyed my portion. Rachel Khoo has a similar recipe if you're interested. You can access it here.

For those of you interested in joining the Social Fitness group, you can do so here. They meet for dinner in central Edinburgh every Friday evening and also run free yoga and running sessions. It's well worth a look!

A beautifully boozy cake

This is a recipe for a gin and tonic cake that is actually by the Great British Bake Off's James Morton. I put my own little twist on it, in that I made a lemony caramel as well as the gin drizzle.

Enjoy.

The finished article

Ingredients
For the cake:
  • 150g salted butter
  • 150g caster sugar
  • 3 medium eggs
  • 150g plain flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons of baking powder
For the drizzle:
  • 100ml gin
  • 50ml tonic
  • 100g sugar (I used caster, James uses granulated)
For the candied lemons:
  • 1 lemon
  • 100g caster sugar
  • 100ml water

Method
  1. pre-heat the oven to 150 fan and line a loaf tin.
  2. make sure the butter is soft and whisk with the eggs and sugar until totally combined.
  3. gently stir in the dry ingredients with a wooden spoon.
  4. place in your tin and bake for 40 minutes until golden brown.
  5. while it's cooling, make the drizzle by mixing the ingredients in a bowl until the sugar has dissolved.
  6. pour it over the cake while it is still warm in the tin,
  7. now make the candied lemons by slicing them and adding them to a pan with the water and sugar.
  8. heat on medium, stirring continuously until the mix comes to a simmer. Once it is simmering, stop stirring.
  9. it will be ready when the the water and sugar have reduced and are golden in colour. Place the sweet lemons on the cake.
  10. my twist is that I also poured the lemony caramel left in the pan over the cake. If you don't like it sweet, just stick to the gin drizzle.
  11. serve, enjoy, and don't drive!

Latest Edinburgh eats and drinks

Greetings food lovers and drink sippers! I've been so busy since February so haven't really had much of an opportunity to update you on my latest food and drink finds in and around the city. Here is my rundown of worthwhile establishments from the end of February until now. I haven't reviewed every place I've eaten or drank but only the ones that are new to me or are a favourite and are worthy of another visit and mention! Happy dining!

The Roseleaf
Location - Sandport Place, Leith

What I ate and drank - Mad Hatters T-Party! Think afternoon tea but turned up a notch. Favourites included chicken croquettes, coronation Scotch eggs and rich chocolate tiffin slices. The cocktails were sweet and delicious, with Rose Garden being a highlight - a gin and rose infusion.

Howies
Location - Waterloo Place
What I ate and drank - we went for a 40th birthday meal, so Prosecco was flowing in abundance, as well as wine on the table. The food was hearty and traditional. I had haggis, neeps and tatties to start, then stuffed chicken with some potatoes and gravy. Very satisfying, even if I was blurry by the end...

Sligh House
Location - George IV Bridge
What I ate and drank -  I was excited to try Sligh being a massive fan of Bar Kohl. I didn't eat, but the new drinks list is refreshing and refined. I tried Tincture, Tailor, Soldier Spy (the one with the lollipop below) - a strong mix of gin, elderflower and other delicious things, and Fifteen Ways to Say Cat (the one with the shrub below) - another yummy blend, this time of vodka, Icelandic bitters and ginger beer. Excellent.

Pickles
Location - Broughton Street
What I ate and drank -  I love the cheeseboard deal from Pickles. You get everything below (cheeses, chutneys, bread, oatcakes and pickles) and a bottle of wine for £25. Perfect for two to share. The cheese is a treat and the staff are charming. A must-visit.

Pinto
Location - Shandwick Place
What I ate and drank -  we opted for the £10 deal. You get a meal and two alcohol drinks. It's a real bargain. I had a beef burrito with a beer and a margarita. I already can't wait to go back. Excuse my signature lipstick smothered all over the burrito.

Heads and Tales
Location - Shandwick Place/Rutland Street
What I ate and drank -  I didn't eat but opted for the quirky "make your own" as shown on the menu below. I had Gin Mare with mango in a martini glass.  Delicious.

The Jolly Botanist
Location - Morrison Street
Website - I couldn't find a website but here is their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Jolly-Botanist/737872066276096
What I ate and drank -  again, I didn't eat but I had the undernoted Easter cocktail. A sweet and unusual treat!

Monteiths
Location - Royal Mile
What I ate and drank -  duck fat chips with lobster mayo and a Skittles Swizzle cocktail. The cocktail, as the name suggests, tastes just like Skittles. It is a joyful concoction of vodka, strawberries and Pinot Noir. I can't get enough.
